The Imps battled hard at automatic promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park on Saturday but came away pointless after a narrow defeat.

The Imps stood firm until 65 minutes when Cameron Humphreys made the most of a slip by Sean Roughan and kept his composure to fire home the decisive goal.

Head coach Michael Skubala made two changes to the XI that were held by Exeter City last Saturday, with Erik Ring coming in for his first start since December 2024, replacing Dom Jefferies.

The other alteration saw Ben House take James Collins’ place, while Joe Gardner returned to the squad following international duty with Republic of Ireland U21.

Skubala felt his side performed well enough to deserve a point: “Both sides defended well in the first half but we started the second half well and came out as the better team, and for a spell we looked like we were on top and having better territory.

“We swapped a few things around at half-time to have more control of the game, and I thought we did that but were done on the transition. We didn’t do enough to win the game but it also feels harsh to have lost - we just didn’t test their keeper enough to get back into the game.”

Skubala added: “We want to test ourselves against these god teams, to see how we can develop and grow. We kept their good forwards like Richard Kone quiet, but we need more threat ourselves.”

Defender Tendayi Darikwa (pictured in action above) is confident his team-mates will not dwell on the defeat. He said: “They’re in a good position in the league, but they didn’t create many clear-cut chances and a point would have been fair for both teams.

“We know from our viewpoint the goal came from an individual slip - but that is part and parcel of the game. We’ll stick by each other and keep going to finish the season as strong as possible.”

City are back in action at the LNER Stadium on Tuesday evening when Huddersfield Town are the visitors.
