Whittons Park trees removed this week
Ten trees will be removed from Whittons Park in Lincoln this week to prepare for a £1.7m repair scheme to Yarborough Road.
The work funded by Lincolnshire County Council is to repair the sinking road area near the top of the hill before the Burton Road roundabout.
Sam Edwards, Head of Highways Infrastructure, said: “Ahead of our essential repairs to the northern section of Yarborough Hill later this year, we are removing ten trees in Whittons Park to make way for the new reinforced earth embankment we’ll be building.
“We always do everything we can to avoid taking down trees but, in this instance, it’s essential to the safety repairs we need to carry out here. We’ll also be planting ten new trees in the park when we’re finished our repair works.”
The removal works will start today for up to three days. As part of this, Stop/Go boards will be in use as needed to allow access for the contractor. The area in the park near to the works will also be cordoned off to ensure the safety of members of the public.
The embankment repairs will start in early June and last up to four months correcting issues caused by inadequate drainage, which has led to saturated ground causing movement and retaining walls starting to fail.
The project will also include:
- installation of new drainage to manage the water in the ground
- removal of the existing concrete layby
- rebuilding the footway near the current layby so it is adjacent to the carriageway
