Two-week diversion on Hawthorn Road in April
Two weeks of repairs will be carried out along the paths and cycleways on Hawthorn Road, Lincoln, next month.
A diversion will be in place during remedial work to a previous improvement scheme, which will be carried out by Lincolnshire County Council contractors.
The original scheme had been to improve the pedestrian and cycle link on Hawthorn Road between the Lincoln Eastern Bypass and Little Cherry, which finished in the autumn of 2024
Sam Edwards, Head of Highways infrastructure, said: “We always carry out tests to ensure newly laid surfacing meets the high standards we expect.
“Unfortunately, in this instance, the asphalt hasn’t met our stringent requirements and the underground weed barrier is not strong enough to contain the invasive weeds growing underneath. The combination of these two things has led to cracks forming, subsidence occurring, and weeds growing out from the new footway/cycleway.
“As a result, the contractor will be replacing the affected surfacing as part of our contract with them, at their own cost. As part of those works, we’ll also be taking the opportunity to treat the invasive weeds and install a stronger weed barrier.
“Acting now means we can stop the pathway breaking down because of the invasive weeds, which will mean more pleasant and safer walks for people in the area in the long term.”
The work will start on Tuesday, April 7 for up to two weeks along the southern side of Hawthorn Road, between the Lincoln Eastern Bypass and Cherry Paddocks and in the reverse direction along the northern side.
There will be 24/7 road closure on the southern side of Hawthorn Road (pedestrian access will be maintained) and a daytime lane closure with temporary traffic signals on the northern side.
The diversion route will be via Kennel Lane / A158 / Lincoln Eastern Bypass, and vice versa.
Sam Edwards continued: “Repairing these defects now will not only save the council money and time in the future, but it will prevent further disruption.
“Because these works will inevitably cause some disruption, I want to thank everyone in advance for bearing with us.”
