Overview of Bailgate repairs
Highways chiefs have issued an overview on progress on the Bailgate improvement project and the work still to be done.
Achieved in February:
- Completed laying of all old and new setts with new mortar base and joints in Phase 1
- Completed new road markings in Phase 1
- Switched traffic management to Phase 2
- Removed half of Phase 2 setts
- Re-laid old and new setts in half of Phase 2
- Repaired four heritage street lighting columns
What’s happening in March
- Complete laying of old and new setts with new mortar base and joints in Phase 2
- Switch traffic management to Phase 4A
- Re-lay old and new setts in the whole of Phase 4A
- Complete all road markings on Bailgate
- Collaboration with National Grid to lay new power cable
Current/ongoing traffic restrictions and closures
- 24/7 closure between Newport Arch and Westgate (Phase 2)
Upcoming traffic restrictions and closures
- 24/7 closure of Westgate between Greggs and The Castle Hotel from mid-March to late May
- No through-traffic outside of Westgate Academy starting w/c 13th April for one week
- Closure of the section of Bailgate between Newport and Newport Arch starting w/c 20th April for up to two weeks, with local diversions onto Bailgate in place
Project phasing
- Phase 1 – between Westgate and The White Hart Hotel
- Phases 2 – between Newport Arch and Westgate
- Phase 4A – Westgate between Greggs and The Castle Hotel
- Phase 4B – between Newport and Newport Arch
- Phase 5 – the raised crossing outside Westgate Academy
