New road will be backbone of development

Work on the road that will open up the Charterholme development is scheduled to start next year.

Following City of Lincoln Council’s announcement yesterday that £37.2 million of funding had been unlocked from Homes England for the development – see news section – the authority confirmed its commitment to deliver the spine road through the new Lincoln suburb connecting Skellingthorpe Road with Tritton Road.

The route will provide sustainable access to the Charterholme site for pedestrians and cyclists, with dedicated cycle and footway provision. It will also provide an additional route for vehicles and a priority route for bus travel over the course of the development, once open to the public.

The road will provide a direct route over the railway line without the need to use a level crossing, helping to ease pressure on busy roads on the south side of the city.

City of Lincoln Council will construct the road on the portion of land it owns.

Works to deliver the new route are expected to begin on site in 2027, subject to planning and technical approvals.

The delivery of the spine road is a critical step in opening land for development and will unlock around 2,800 new homes across the Charterholme site, including a minimum of 20 per cent affordable housing.

The improved infrastructure will also support wider benefits to the city, notably through the delivery of the spine route as well as wider facilities that are due to be delivered over the course of the development, including a new primary school, local centre and open space for recreation and leisure.

Cllr Naomi Tweddle, Leader of City of Lincoln Council, said: “The spine road is the key piece of infrastructure needed to unlock Charterholme. Delivering this route will not only improve connectivity across the city but will also enable the development of new homes for Lincoln.

“Thanks to the recoverable grant from Homes England, which the council worked so hard to secure, we are now able to deliver this vital road years ahead of the original schedule, accelerating growth and bringing forward much-needed housing for the city.

“City of Lincoln Council is committed to delivering the very best for our city and its residents as we plan for the next generation of homes and communities.”

Hamish Falconer, MP for Lincoln, added: “This is a major step forward for Lincoln. The new spine road at Charterholme will transform connectivity across the south of the city, easing congestion and unlocking thousands of new homes, including much-needed affordable housing.

“Backed by significant government investment, this is exactly the kind of infrastructure our growing city needs. I’m pleased to see partners working together to deliver it and will keep pushing to ensure Lincoln continues to get the investment it deserves.”
