£37m for new homes in Lincoln

Over £37million worth of funding has been unlocked for new housing through City of Lincoln Council signing an agreement with Homes England.

The £37.2 million deal for the Charterholme development is the largest single grant the council has ever secured and one of Homes England’s largest investments in Lincolnshire to date.

The funding will support the provision of critical infrastructure needed to open Lincoln’s new suburb for the development of around 1,000 new homes. A minimum of 20 per cent of the homes on council-owned land at Charterholme will be delivered as affordable housing.

This work will include drainage, land raising, utilities and the delivery of the spine road connecting Skellingthorpe Road and Tritton Road, providing a direct route over the railway line without the need to use a level crossing.

The grant will be recoverable, which means the council will repay the funding through the income generated from future land and plot sales for housing development.

Cllr Naomi Tweddle, Leader of City of Lincoln Council, said: “This agreement with Homes England is a major step forward for Charterholme and marks an exciting milestone for Lincoln’s future growth.

“The funding unlocks the opportunity for us to deliver the vital infrastructure needed to bring the site to life, including essential drainage works, land preparation and the creation of the spine road that will ultimately connect Skellingthorpe Road and Tritton Road.

“By putting this infrastructure in place, we are opening the door for around 1,000 new homes, including much-needed affordable homes, and creating the foundations for sustainable, long-term growth in the city.”

Hamish Falconer, MP for Lincoln, added: “This £37.2 million investment is a major step forward for Lincoln and a clear example of this government delivering for our city. By unlocking the infrastructure needed at Charterholme, we can bring forward around 1,000 new homes, including much-needed affordable housing, and support jobs and growth locally.

“I’m pleased to have worked with partners to help secure this funding and will continue pushing to ensure Lincoln gets the investment it needs for the future.”

Jo Nugent, Regional Director for the Midlands at Homes England, said: “We are proud to support councils that demonstrate delivery leadership and ambition to build high quality places.

“Charterholme is a worthy example of great partnership working, where the public and private sector are combining their efforts to deliver a new sustainable community in the heart of the city of Lincoln.

“Our investment of £37.2 million through the Brownfield Infrastructure and Land Fund will unlock the council’s early infrastructure barriers and enable the acceleration of homes built. This funding builds on previous Homes England investment to City of Lincoln Council, which enabled the first 52 homes, under construction.”
