Dad’s tribute to Declan

Dad’s tribute to Declan

The father of Declan Sawyer, Carl, has paid tribute to his son after the 15-year-old died at Swanholme Lakes on Sunday.

"Our darling boy Declan was a funny and outgoing young man who loved his fishing and his football.

“He had a very cheeky smile and the personality to match.

“He was very much loved by his friends and family and will be missed dearly by many.

"With his tragic and unexpected passing on Sunday, May 24 at Swanholme Lakes, we would like to raise awareness about children playing near any rivers or lakes in the hot weather.

“Please can all parents, friends and family make their children aware of the dangers surrounding water.

"As a family we would like to have some privacy at this very sad and upsetting time to process our loss. Many thanks.”

Police were called to the city beauty spot at 2.30pm on Sunday after receiving reports that a boy had got into difficulty after getting into the water.

At first Declan could not be found, but divers from the Under Water Search Team recovered the teenager’s body on Sunday night.

“Our thoughts are with Declan's family and our specially trained officers continue to support them,” said a police spokesperson.

Declan’s school, The Priory Academy in Lincoln, has described his loss as devastating and said it is ready to support grieving students.

“Declan was a valued member of our academy and a loyal friend to many students. His presence and character in our academy will be sorely missed by staff and students alike, and his absence will be felt profoundly in the coming days, weeks and months ahead.”
