Beware fair-weather fraudsters
Dodgy workmen are more likely to be knocking on your door during the warmer weather, police have warmed.
“Rogue traders cold call to offer work for which they extort large amounts of money. This work that can range from being drastically overpriced, to shoddy, to non-existent,” explained a spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police
“If you are thinking of having some improvements to your home or garden there are ways you can protect yourself and your family from rogue traders.”
These include:
- not feeling pressured by unexpected trades people at your door;
- checking reviews and asking for references or seeking recommendations from family or friends;
- if possible, getting three written quotes and avoid paying for work at your doorstep - do not go to a cash machine if asked to;
- knowing that someone who is genuine will happily give you a written estimate – bogus workmen often avoid paperwork or try to get cash up front, a trustworthy tradesperson won’t rush you, demand cash or hide their details;
- never paying in full before the work is done;
- speaking to a family member, friend, or neighbour before agreeing to anything as rogue traders rely on pressure and isolation — so take your time and get a second opinion.
“Ensure you report any suspicious activity and if someone’s knocking on doors or making you feel pressured, you can call the police on 101 — or 999 in an emergency.”
