Funeral for details for Tommo

The funeral of former City player and manager Steve Thompson will take place on Friday, October 17.

Thompson, who had two spells as a player at Sincil Bank before taking over as manager, died recently after a long battle with cancer.

The funeral will take place at Lincoln Crematorium at 10am followed by a wake at the LNER Stadium.

With a significant amount of people expected to attend the funeral, supporters who wish to pay their respects are invited to join us at the LNER Stadium before the service when the funeral cortege will pass around the footprint. Timing will be confirmed nearer the date.

After starting his career with Worksop Town and Boston United, Steve had two spells with City as player at Sincil Bank - 1980-1985 and 1989-1990, with spells at Charlton Athletic, Leicester City and Sheffield United in between.

He took over as manager in November 1990, leading the Imps away from relegation trouble in Division Four - he remained in charge until May 1993. He also had spells as manager of Southend United, Sheffield United, Cambridge United and Notts County.

He remained a familiar face - and voice - to Imps fans as a regular co-commentator for Radio Lincolnshire, travelling across the country to offer his insight on games.

City chairman Clive Nates said: "I'd like to offer condolences to Steve's family from everyone at the club - he was a truly welcoming presence when I first got involved and was a huge character right until the end of his life.

"I am very grateful for the kindness he showed me and my family, and he leaves a lasting legacy."

Steve is survived by his partner Julie as well as sons Alex and Jack.
