Visit local churches during festival

A record 119 buildings will be taking part in this year’s West Lindsey Churches Festival over two weekends in May.

Over May 9-10, 58 churches open their doors with 61 getting ready to welcome visitors over May 16-17 as the festival celebrates its 30th year.

Many of the churches are within easy reach of Lincoln and each has its own heritage as well as architecture, stained glass, sculptures, wood carvings monuments and graveyards full of history.

This festival is made possible by hundreds of church volunteers, who add to the festival their knowledge of local history, plant and book sales, flower displays, exhibitions and bell ringing – and homemade refreshments.

The Minster Church of St Mary at Stow is a festival favourite with its blend of Saxon and Norman architecture and it’s just a short trip from there to St Edith’s at Coates by Stow where visitors can sit in the pews to admire the rood screen.

At South Carlton there’s the restored 17th century Monson Monument at St John the Baptist while St Michael and All Angels’ Victorian Gothic splendour is set in tranquil woodland at Hackthorn and features intricate woodwork.
