Debut for ‘kitchen’ drama People Like Us
Lincoln students built a full-scale kitchen from scratch to stage their debut show tomorrow (Saturday, May 23).
The University of Lincoln Level 3 Drama students are members of the theatre collective Retyped, which will be presenting People Like Us this Saturday.
To make an authentic set they spent several months collecting furniture, organising fundraising events and painting materials to create an old-school kitchen for their final year show. They used the £1,200 raised to buy upcycled furniture, paint supplies, realistic props and to support the technical team to bring their vision to the stage.
Alongside studies and rehearsals, the group has dedicated weekly sessions to sanding, painting, and arranging furniture to construct the set. With additional support from family and friends, the team successfully created a full-size kitchen complete with custom built frames and a walk-through fridge.
Retyped member, and Lincoln Independent intern Lily Bowen said: “We are so excited to finally see everything come together on the auditorium stage. The set is vibrant and eye-catching, and all the furniture has been sourced through Facebook Marketplace as we wanted to make sure the production is as sustainable as possible.”
The production is open to the public, and the group hopes to share the results of its hard work with the wider Lincoln community.
Lily added: “For all the students involved, People Like Us represents more than just another performance. As our final production together after three years, the show marks the end of the chapter at university.
“Those looking for a light-hearted evening filled with humour, nostalgia, a vibrant set and classic throwback songs, catch People Like Us at the Lincoln Arts Centre Auditorium this Saturday at 7pm.”
