Artist Tracey Smith is keeping it simple for exhibition
Tracey Smith’s latest exhibition, Fish and Flowers, does exactly what it says in the title as the Lincoln artist is keeping things simple in her current works.
“It is essentially a variation of work based on a theme of fish and flowers. The initial painting, Milly's Garden (bottom image) was the starting point - Milly being my cat who died last year at the grand old age of 20. My garden is growing increasingly wilder and haphazard and I wanted to reflect this in my painting while also creating a homage to Milly herself.”
The painting Fish and Flowers (below) evolved from Milly's Garden with simple representations of flowers and fish in a pond.
“I resisted the temptation to tidy things up (a bit like my garden).
“When people say, ' my five-year-old could do that', well that is exactly the look I was going for. It might not make sense to the viewer, but it does to me and working simply is not always as easy as you might think.
The Fish on the Wall image used for the show’s poster (see above) is where the variation on a theme comes in.
“Using easily recognisable simple shapes with combinations of colour and pattern, the possibilities, as they say, are endless - well at least until I get tired of them.”
Fish and Flowers can be seen until May 24, from 10am to 5pm, at Gallery at St Martin's Hungate, Lincoln, LN1 1ET.
