The Scholar Scoop: Coffee Depot

Welcome to The Scholar Scoop! This series has been created by Hello Lincoln interns Lily and Katie to highlight the independent cafes in the city. 

The University of Lincoln students decided to start these features as they felt that Lincoln has many cafes that people may not have explored yet. 

“We want to shed light on these places and find out what makes each one unique. So, if you are walking around Lincoln and thinking ‘where can I get a coffee from?’ why not try one of these places and discover where you can grab your new favourite drink.”

In the third feature Lily (pictured below) visits the Coffee Depot before the duo take a break for the Christmas holidays – they’ll be back with the Scoop in February.

Coffee Depot has become one of my local community’s finest independent businesses. Opening in April 2022 it sits at the end of Carholme Road and attracts many passers-by. 

I have visited Coffee Depot on numerous occasions - whether I am walking in for a busy day at university or just fancying a walk to one of my favourite study spots to catch up with work.

I not only enjoy the atmosphere of the café as a place to study, but its location is also ideal for me and many other students who live in Lincoln’s West-End. After a long week at university, my housemates and I often enjoy relaxing hours at Coffee Depot, picking up a hot drink and toastie or bagel to take away before heading to West Common at the far end of Carholme Road.

I really enjoy the aesthetic of the coffee shop; the industrial effect, blurred with a modern blend, creates a very relaxing but rustic setting, which I find perfect for not only studying but also socialising. 

One thing that really stands out to me about this spot is the late-night opening, which are regularly updated on social media, extending their usual closing time to 9pm certain nights during the week.

Third year University of Lincoln student Katie said: “Coffee Depot is in the perfect spot for quick bite and coffee on the go, especially if you have a busy day at university ahead of you”. 

Coffee Depot has really grown in popularity in the past year with students and I see many sharing their days studying or doing their own coffee shop reviews on their own Tik Tok and Instagram Reels. I think because it is just on the outskirts of the city centre, it is perfect for many those people who attend the university, but live in private accommodation.

Coffee Depot stands out as an asset to Lincoln offering affordable food and drink, which makes it especially welcoming for students. With both board games and a  bookshelf, it invites customers to read, trade books and socialse while enjoying their coffee.
