Group faces final summer of sailing for disabled
A group that enables disabled people to enjoy sailing faces closure unless it can find financial support.
Hykeham Sailability provides a unique opportunity for people with physical and learning disabilities to sail on Lincoln’s Apex Lake.
Established 15 years ago Hykeham Sailability offers safe sailing experiences, training, and qualified safety cover in an inclusive and supportive environment.
But organisers say the need for funding is now more pressing than ever.
“Increasing costs of running the charity, coupled with its limited resources, have resulted in financial difficulties,” said Peter Harrold.
“The main activity of Hykeham Sailability is to offer access to sailing for disabled individuals, helping to improve both their physical and mental well-being. The freedom and independence that sailing can provide are often unmatched by other activities, and this initiative has been key in bringing a sense of achievement and joy to many individuals who may otherwise struggle to participate in outdoor sports.
“With approximately 20 members who sail weekly between May and October, the club offers an affordable outlet for these individuals, who pay a nominal fee of £50 per annum
With a fleet of 12 boats the charity is looking for help in meeting its £6,000-a-year running costs so it doesn’t have to increase the charges to the people who sail every week from May to October.
Peter added: “With financial support, Hykeham Sailability will be able to continue to serve its community, providing physical activity, social engagement, and empowerment for people with disabilities. The requested grant would allow the charity to sustain itself and grow, reaching more people who could benefit from the joy of sailing.
“I believe Hykeham Sailability is a vital resource that deserves support. The impact of sailing on the well-being of its members cannot be overstated, and any funds received will ensure that the organisation can continue to make a difference for years to come.”
