Free carol service at Lincoln Cathedral this Saturday

Free carol service at Lincoln Cathedral this Saturday

This Saturday, 29 November at 6pm, Lincoln Cathedral is hosting its annual Advent Carol Service, this year for the first time, in partnership with St Barnabas Hospice.

Held by candlelight in a reflective atmosphere in the nave of the Cathedral, the evening marks the beginning of Advent and the journey towards the light and hope of Christmas.

The Very Revd Dr Simon Jones, Dean of Lincoln said that he was looking forward to welcoming people from across the city and beyond to the service.

“Advent marks the beginning of the new church year and is a season of anticipation as we approach the joy of Christ’s birth at Christmas.

“This service begins the countdown to Christmas with traditional Advent carols, hymns and readings, the words of which help us focus on the Advent theme of light in the darkness. As we all light our candles during the service it is a chance to reflect on what that light means to us and what really matters to us.”

A collection at the service will support the work of St Barnabas Hospice, a local independent charity which supports more than 12,000 people annually across Lincolnshire who are affected by a life-limiting or terminal illness. The vital funds raised will allow them to continue providing palliative and end-of-life care across the county.

As the Advent Carol Service takes place, Lincoln Cathedral will be lit in blue and yellow – the colours of St Barnabas Hospice. Following this from  November 30 to Christmas Eve on 24 December the Cathedral will be lit in purple, reflecting the traditional liturgical colour of the Advent season;  you’ll see this reflected in the vestments and altar cloths used in the Cathedral during this time too.

The Advent Carol Service starts at 6pm and free to attend – tickets not needed.
