Bypass contractors want to work with communities along route

The contractors behind North Hykeham Relief Road will enhance the communities along its route through social value projects.

Lincolnshire County Council chose Balfour Beatty to deliver the £110m bypass because of its commitment to benefitting local communities beyond the transport links.

“We place social value at the heart of our big road projects, ensuring that investment in major infrastructure brings meaningful and long-term benefits to local people,” said Cllr David East, executive member for highways.

“By setting clear goals and working with partners who have a proven track record in this area, we can ensure residents benefit as much as possible from our investment in infrastructure.”

Balfour Beatty has a sustainability strategy called Building New Futures, which focuses on leaving a legacy of benefits in the communities it serves.

Michelle Mann, the contractor’s social impact manager explained: “As we deliver the North Hykeham Relief Road, we’re keen to work closely with local communities to understand where we can make the biggest positive difference.

“Whether that’s supporting a community project, arranging a school visit or engaging with local organisations, we’d encourage people and organisations to get in touch and help us shape a lasting legacy for the area.”

Balfour Beatty’s social value plans along the relief route include:

  • School visits & workshops – including hands-on activities, such as bridge-building challenges and career talks, designed to spark curiosity and introduce students to the world of construction.
  • Career days in education – collaboration with colleges, universities, and learning centres to help open doors to careers in engineering, infrastructure, and sustainability.
  • Work experience & apprenticeships – offering real-world experience and mentoring to help young people explore roles in construction, engineering, administration, and beyond.
  • Community projects – from volunteering to material donations to local initiatives, project teams will actively support causes that matter to nearby communities.
  • STEM engagement – promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education to empower the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.

Cllr East added: “The project team is currently looking for ways to make a positive difference in the communities near to where we’re building the North Hykeham Relief Road.
