Portland Towing Centre taken over by Lindum Plant

After over four decades’ service to the Lincoln community Portland Towing Centre Ltd is preparing to close its doors in 2025 on the retirement of owners, the Horn family.

But it’s not the end of the line for the business as it is being taken over by Lindum Plant.

Founded by Peter Horn in 1982, Portland Towing grew from a single unit fitting towbars and selling small camping trailers into a trusted local organisation. Peter was joined by his wife, Glenys, and Lee Frayne, who together built a reputation for reliable expertise. The tradition continued when Peter’s son, Mark Horn, joined in 1994, helping the company adapt to new vehicle technology.

“Portland Towing Centre Ltd was very much a family business,” said Mark. “We are very lucky to be a family that can work so closely together, and as much as the family has allowed the company to grow, the company has allowed the family to do the same.”

The decision to cease trading was made as Peter reached retirement age and as rapid changes in the automotive industry made aftermarket work increasingly challenging.

The family found a solution that would continue their mission of facilitating safe towing for the community as long-standing customer, the Lindum Group, is stepping up to ensure these services remain available.

Lindum Plant will expand its existing services to offer trailer hire, maintenance, and parts picking up where Portland Towing leaves off.

 “Despite its size, Lindum Plant has the exact same family feel that we had with Portland Towing. Every Lindum Group employee we have spoken to has emphasised that fact. They are the perfect business to pick up where Portland Towing left off,” said Mark.
