New rules for tenants and landlords
The Renters Rights Act comes into force a week today in a bid to improve standards in privately let accommodation.
West Lindsey District Council is hosting an information event for landlords and tenants to help them understand the new rules which come into effect on May 1.
The Act brings in a wide range of new requirements for landlords, alongside strengthened protections for tenants, including abolishing Section 21 or no–fault evictions.
The workshop will take place on Tuesday, April 28 between 12pm and 2pm at the Guildhall in Gainsborough where attendees will be able to learn more about the changes and ask questions directly to representatives from DASH (Decent and Safe Homes) East Midlands, EMPO, and the council officers who will be responsible for delivering and enforcing key elements of the new legislation.
Cllr Emma Bailey, Chair of the council’s Prosperous Communities Committee, said: “We are entering into a huge period of change for the private rented sector and we want to provide as much assistance as possible to landlords and tenants so that they are prepared and ready.
“We know that a lot of landlords and letting agents will already be making plans and we hope we can provide further advice and guidance to make these changes as smooth as possible.”
A key element of the Renters Rights Act is the introduction of enhanced enforcement powers for local authorities. The event will also outline how the council intends to approach its new responsibilities across its district.
